 backstory: what inspired the collection above?...(a). seeing african women, in Harlem and the garment district, w/ varies african printed cottons on, in one outfit. (it's was the mixing of prints/patterns that started my inspiration for this collection).  (b). Yinka Shonibare (his show @ the James Cohan Gallery, may 2008)  (c). Dries van Noten  (d). Suno  (e). Marni  (f). Duro Olowu (seeing his work and reading an article on him, a couple of years ago, set my "inspired wheels", a turning).
I wanted to recreate the "sway drawstring pant" while working on this collection, so i look back to my "Interrupted Collection" 2001 (this is when i first introduced that design).  While looking thru the photos from the show, i noticed , it was then i first started experimenting with waxed african cottons. 

side bar: because of my name (aka "when the industry started, "trying", to give me a complex"), i would shy away from using african fabric (it seemed to stereotypical + i didn't want to be labeled and/or pigeon holed as an african "tribal wear" designer).
i'm blessed, it didn't take long before i realized "embrace not erase."
