"StoP talking the TaLk."
attn: all new designers, small designer, "fallen off" and starting over again designers...whether you're a start up, self financed or "one" employee company, you must be about the business of your business..."fashion design".
"It's not enough just to love clothes", you also need to know the models and the personalities of the moment. research, read, visit museums & exhibitions, watch films. get to know NEW designers and those of the PAST. look to other fields of design for inspiration; architecture, jewelry, millnery, interior, automotive...it will be surprising how inspired you can be.
also don't let people put you or your work down, don't copy blatantly, don't follow the crowd. be clear about who "you are" as a designer and what's your design message, you're putting out there.
STOP calling yourself a fashion designers unless you are truly "grinding it out" 5-7 days a week/13-15 hour days all day every day (or something like that). if you're one of those who spend 3-4 hours a week on your craft...call it a hobby and switch your designer title to homemaker, seamstress or tailor (any one of those will do). be clear about the path you will take (not forgetting all the time, money, blood, sweat and tears that go w/the territory)...then go for it full speed ahead...learning along the way.
remember...it's a BUSINESS so act accordingly and, at ALL times, be PROFESSIONAL.
